Cordless vacuums are becoming more and more popular as their technology advances. And I couldn’t be more thankful. I remember all the vacuums I had growing up and how annoyed I would get at the cord getting caught on furniture or just not being long enough. Don’t get me started on how much some of them weighed. Seriously, I’m only 5 ft and some change, so dragging around a beater bar with a hose attached to the main unit was not fun as a much shorter 7 year old. So yes, I am very grateful that my future children will not know the struggle of antiquated corded vacuums.
Back in 2018 I had graduated from highschool and moved out with my highschool sweetheart into a rental. A home of my own. My landlord was very nice and had left us a Dirt devil corded vacuum. It wouldn’t reach to the bottom of our carpeted staircase that led outside without an extension cord. After hearing me grumble at that vacuum for nearly half a year my amazing boyfriend asked if a cordless vacuum would be something I would like for a christmas present. It turned out to be our first major purchase as adults and I don’t regret it. In fact this vacuum is still going strong all the way into June of 2022. Which vacuum did I get you wonder? Read until the end to find out!
But first, here’s my main reasons to switch to a cordless vacuum.
1.) They’re Much Lighter!
Traditional vacuums are extremely heavy and even though I have grown a few inches since I was seven it never changed the fact that dragging around a heavy vacuum makes for slow work. Also, if you’re in your silver years or have an autoimmune disease like me sometimes your joints can’t handle heavy lifting and that can make keeping a clean home really hard. Luckily even on my worst days I can vacuum and even have had my 5-year-old nephew vacuum too! (He wanted to vacuum I swear it wasn’t child labor!)
2.) Extremely Easy to Dump
Remember those flimsy paper bags with a rectangle of cardboard with the hole you had to line up in the vacuum after almost having to take it completely apart? Yeah, I’m talking about emptying one of those old vacuums. I remember never knowing when it was time to change the vacuum bag but if it was time, I usually got my mom because getting to the bag, getting it out without spilling some and putting the new bag in was literally impossible. I once tore that flimsy bag and was shocked to find out how much they cost. And yes, the newer corded vacuums (that are just as heavy) have a bagless dump system but the ones that I have used still are much harder to dump than my cordless vacuum.
3.) Use it Anywhere! Even Camping!
Oh, you bet your sweet apples I bring my vacuum camping. My childhood was possibly weird and maybe I did see my mom vacuuming the outdoor rugs and cobwebs on our porch but why shouldn’t you? A vacuum is an amazing tool that is now, without a cord, so limitless in use. Now wait, I know I may have lost you but picture this. You used to have to bring your car to a carwash or park it as closes to the house as possible while running two power cables that would somehow get tangled on every sprinkler head and tire on that car… just to vacuum your car out. But not anymore! Like I said you can bring and use that vacuum pretty much anywhere and that does not stop at the door of your car. So go ahead! Try it out!
4.) Small compact for use and storage
A cordless stick vacuum takes up no room at all in a closet. I have mine right beside a dresser full of cleaning supplies and I literally forget it is there sometimes. Even in the house I rented from 1902 I had this ity bity broom closet, like no joke it was like 1 foot wide by one foot deep but that vacuum fit in there while I know for sure another vacuum would not have fit. And when it is in use the small slender design lets you get around and under furniture like a champ. The stick and beater bar even pops off on mine to let me attach my detail cleaning tool which makes cleaning drawers simple and easy.
5.) No cord to fight!
Oh, this one I am passionate about. I am this close to saying no to my own mother when she asks me to vacuum when I’m over because I seriously hate dealing with cords. Finding outlets, dodging furniture, trying to wrap it back up when you’re done vacuuming… it’s just so much extra work for something that could be simple and easy. Like a cordless vacuum. Honestly, I think you get the point, so I’ll stop with my passive aggressiveness against those overly complicated corded vacuums.
Now for the vacuum I own! It’s the 2018 shark ion cordless vacuum. Now i couldn’t find the exact model/it was out of stock but this one was the newer comparable model.
I would suggest that you look into the new cordless vacuum you’ll own for its battery life, floor type you have, and if you have pets…they have cordless vacuums for that too! So, enjoy your new vacuum because I know you’ll never go back to a corded vacuum just like me.
