Welcome back to The Self Sufficient Citizen where I talk about homemaking, homesteading and self-reliance. The weather is warming up and we are coming up to the first official day of spring. And you know what that means? Spring cleaning 2023!
What is it?
Spring cleaning is a tradition where you deep clean your home after winter. I don’t want to get into the niddy gritty for this post of how exactly spring cleaning came to be since there is so much information on that already online and this is specifically a cleaning list for spring. But in short Where it came from exactly is unknown. It can be traced back to Iranian, jewish and Chinese cultures. While all of the cultures who cleaned in the spring had different reasons for “spring cleaning” (ranging from religion to simply the weather was warm). It is something that I have welcomed into my home each year. I would encourage you to look at other resources online to learn more about each culture and how it has helped form our traditions now in modern times.
So why is spring cleaning in the spring?
Spring is the season after a cold winter. Your home is closed up for months and some chores go undone during the holidays. When spring comes we can air out our homes and set order to the chaos. Plus this is when we get to go out and get a bunch of pretty flowers to bring into our homes! The last part isn’t necessary but it is nice to see some tulips on your dining table. Expecially after cleaning the whole house!
How quickly should I do my spring cleaning?
I would recommend picking a room and working on it over a course of a week. This list might be able to be done in a day but it is a lot, especially if you are alone. There is no harm in doing things slowly in fact it will help ensure you are doing the best job you can with each room! For that reason, I have ordered my list from “coldest” outside to “warmest” outside so you can start right when spring comes to your area regardless of if it is still a bit cooler.
I hope you find this list helpful for your spring cleaning 2023! Let me know if you would be interested in a non-watermarked list. If there is enough demand, I will set up an e-shop to buy it!
