Homemade Gingerbread House

Welcome back to The Self Sufficient Citizen where we are on the 7th day of Blogmas. Usually on my blog I talk about homemaking, homesteading, minimalism and self-reliance but today I’m talking about making a house. A gingerbread house but still! I always have wanted to make a gingerbread house that isn’t in a package. This is because usually the premade houses are hard and lack in flavor. Curiosity killed the cat to see if I could make something soft and delicious. And I did!

Here’s what recipe I used. Definitely make sure to roll your dough out to no more than 1/4 inch. Mine was thinner so it was very hard to get the frosting to hold up the house. That definitely is not dental floss holding together the house…

Another thing I would recommend is making your cutout of cardboard beforehand and make sure it is dusted with flour! When you go to cut out the house the dough is very sticky, and your mold will warp when you try and flip it onto a baking sheet. Flour will prevent a lot of tears.

Frosting

I used goatmilk for my frosting but any milk will do. Here is my recipe for the frosting.

1c powder sugar, 3/4c butter softened, and 1/4-1/2c milk. Mix together until smooth and add color if desired. You can put this into a zipper snack bag with the corner cut or a frosting piping bag.

Assembly

Might I suggest having two people at the time of assembly? It is way easier if someone holds up a wall while another person frosts. Or ties it together with dental floss but hey to each their own. We also had a great variety of candy that is enjoyable to eat stale or during the building. The last thing I will add is I learned that you should put your house on something you don’t need to use. Namely your cutting bored but oh well lol.

I hope that the tips in this post helps! And if you make your own gingerbread house, you have fun, and everything goes well! Until tomorrow!
